Project Overview

How can we help international students build and leverage their community to affordably and efficiently acquire furniture?

Relocating to a new country presents international students with transformative opportunities and significant challenges. Beyond cultural and linguistic barriers, these students must navigate complex logistical issues such as finding housing, sourcing furniture, and connecting with local resources. These difficulties are exacerbated by the high cost of living, a lack of transportation options, and the emotional strain of adapting to a new environment without established support systems.

UniFurnish is a purpose-built digital platform designed to simplify this transition for international students at the University of Washington (UW). Unlike generic platforms like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist, which lack tailored features and trust mechanisms, UniFurnish offers an exclusive, student-focused solution. By combining practical tools with community-driven features, it creates a trusted environment for students to connect, exchange resources, and manage their moving process efficiently.

User Interviews

Key Takeaways
01

All participants used a sadf of multiple apps to find, book a cab or rent a car

02

Users value the ability to detect the damage to car immediately which reflected a sense of satisfaction for the rent-out feature

03

Major products in the market lack desirable features and feel impersonal, outdated and untrustworthy

04

A compare feature with relevant information is paramount when searching for cars.

05

Too much information on screen makes users feel overwhelmed, they'd like a more curated experience

06

Irrelevant suggestions feel impersonal and clutter the UI, filters are highly used tools when searching

Cooking up a better experience

To kick-off the design process, quick sketches helped me get ideas on paper to establish which elements were necessary for each screen. A low fidelity prototype was then created for initial user testing.

Low-Fidelity Prototypes

Using the feedback and insights gained from research, analysis and sketching, a low-fidelity prototype was created to begin user testing.
